A Look at Teen Pregnancy in the United States

  • The US teen birth rate for 15-19 year olds is 55 per 1,000, much higher than in other Western industrialized countries where teen sexual activity rates are similar to ours.  Compare this to Great Britain with 32 per 1,000, Sweden with 13 per 1,000, and the Netherlands with 6 per 1,000.1
  • About 1 million teens become pregnant each year.  Approximately 34% abort, 14% miscarry, and 52% give birth.2
  • 76% of births to teens occur outside of marriage. 3
  • 25% of teen mothers have a second child within two years.1
  • On average, males are 2 1/2 years older that the female, but, 20% of all teenage mothers had a partner six or more years older.  Half the births to 15-17 year olds were fathered by men age 20 or older.4
  • 66% of teen mothers report having experienced molestation, attempted rape, or rape.5
  • Teen birth rates have declined since 1992 due to a slight decline in sexual activity among teens and a notable increase in contraception, particularly condoms.  Abortions continue to decline. 3
  • Our most disadvantaged youth are most likely to become teen parents.1
  • The four risk factors consistently associated with teen pregnancy are:  early school failure, early behavioral problems, family dysfunction, and poverty. 3

A Look at Teen Pregnancy in New Mexico
